Sunset at Pen-Lan

First day after flight and drive from airport to the cousins. Absolutely surprised there was enough water despite outgoing tide to get a quick swim! After the flight, 2 hours traffic jams leaving Paris and 6 hours to Armor-Pleubian, it was welcome surprise!

I am obsessed by this tree and have tried to photograph it for two years now. This one is a cheat and the blue sky got wrecked with banding by either Lightroom or the sharpen AI. Composition challenge

Composition challenge

This was purely me killing time as my wife shopped. I was trying to get the tower, the lamp and the statue all in the same shot all in focus, and properly exposed. The sun direction killed me and I could not get the depth of field to get the tower in focus.

Stone work detail, modern

Stone work detail, modern

This style of stone work, with the massive blocks surrounding a field of colorful smaller stones with raised mortar I believe is a somewhat more modern style. I liked its shape and color. You find these in between doors and windows, generally with three to five inset blocks.

My first perfect flower

My first perfect flower

Again, killing time while my wife and Sonia were shopping nearby, I nailed the focus, “wicked” crisp and sharp (wicked is a Boston expression, meaning “really exemplary”, superlative). This JPEG version does not do it justice but Squarespace is so limited in its image formats and color depth, I really need to migrate my photos to a better platform. I know, I know, SmugMug!

My best Cathedral shot ever

My best Cathedral shot ever

I think except for the pesky cars, I nailed this one. And yes, lots of treatment in software but mainly, balancing the sky and foreground exposures. The sky was almost as is. I did lighten the church more than needed for the impact. I took this one sitting at a cafe with Sonia, Gino and Dominique

Blatant pandering shot of Ile du Chateau

Blatant pandering shot of Ile du Chateau

The light was bad, so instead of throwing away this shot, which has a classic view of the island, I decided to blatantly pander away and mask and boost. My wife hates this edit - the colors are too unnatural. Me, I look around the news papers and internet and this is the treatment given to many photos to pull in the eye. How about you, what is your take?

Mysterious holes in giant granite boulder

I liked the water, clean and clear, glistening amongst the boulders.

Ile du Chateau

Ile du Chateau

A more sober edit of a classic Port Blanc vista. The white tall object is a navigation guide, locally called a “pain de sucre” or sugarloaf. This one as a twin across the mouth of the harbor entrance. Sailors line up the Port Blanc guide on the land (see earlier photo) between these two to find the harbor mouth.

We thought they were some weird species of barnacles all these years. Dominique finally looks them up on the interwebz and lol! they are a snail! Eaten only in times of starvation from what we have heard.

Galets, ciel et mer

Galets, ciel et mer

Gino in the distance along the immense beachs of small rounded stones, galets in French. I like it the shot even if most people don’t. I think it really captures the place, Port Blanc, the immense tides, the later summer sky, and mounds of galets heaped into rows (sillons) and lining the rocky isles, pushed around by waves and the currents and thrown around in the storms.

Ile du Chateau from afar

Ile du Chateau from afar

The water is pretty much that color, I did some editing but again, my objective on this vacation was to shoot so my light level was based on my subject/foreground and then edit the sky back down.

Waiting on the shore

Waiting on the shore

Another friends photos, Sonia and Gino waiting for the dawdling photographer and his lovely mate who has to examine all the rocks and tidal pools looking for interesting sea creatures.

Blow hole for a granite whale?

Blow hole for a granite whale?

This hole in the granite, surrounded by a ring of salt left over from evaporation. Is this natural or was it drilled for some lost reason like a post for navigation or anchorage?
